Made a set of tiedown to carry to fly-ins based on a design by Harold Armstrong in the Aug 1993 EAA Vintage Aircraft magazine available here: http://eaavintage.org/aircraft-tiedowns/
Total cost of raw materials was about $30 at Lowe's and HomeDepot. Weight of the tie-down set is 3.1# not including the rope and a necessary hammer.
Picture (1) shows the set of plates and stakes, and picture (2) shows a tie-down rope looped around the stake to pull it out.
